Understanding Fear in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Fear, known in ancient times as "palpitation," "apprehension," "terror," "dread," or "uneasiness," is considered one of the primal emotions. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), fear is not just a psychological state but also has profound effects on the body's balance of qi, or vital energy.
How TCM Views Fear
In the ancient text "The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon," it is stated that "fear injures the kidneys" and that "fear can be used to treat joy by terrifying one with death." This suggests that fear can have both detrimental and therapeutic effects on the body's energy.
Additionally, in the "Treatise on Cold Damage Disorders," various emotions are described to affect the flow of qi in the body. Fear, in particular, is said to cause the qi to descend, resulting in symptoms such as frequent urination, involuntary urination, weakness in the legs, and muscle cramps.
What TCM Recommends
Here are some acupressure points that can help alleviate the symptoms of fear:
Kidney 1 (Yongquan): Located on the sole of the foot, one-third of the way from the toes to the heel, in the depression between the second and third metatarsal bones.
Kidney 3 (Taixi): Found on the inner side of the ankle, four fingers' width above the inner ankle bone, where the posterior tibial artery pulsates.
Kidney 13 (Shenshu): Positioned on the lower back, on each side of the spine, below the twelfth thoracic vertebra and the first lumbar vertebra.
Governor Vessel 24 (Shenting): Located on the midline of the forehead, between the eyebrows.
Conception Vessel 4 (Guanyuan): Positioned on the midline of the body, four fingers' width below the navel.
